As part of the SG50 celebration, there will be fifty plays shown at various venues in Singapore organised by Esplanade. This will happen from the 2nd of April to the 10th of May 2015.

This will feature works from Singapore produced from the 1960s to the present. By creating a space for reflection and imagination, The Studios: fifty invites everyone to reflect, imagine and understand the world around us, our society and ourselves through these 50 works. Co-curated by Esplanade and Singapore theatre practitioner Chong Tze Chien, The Studios: fifty also brings together 21 directors, including several newer ones, who give a fresh perspective to these selected works of 32 Singapore playwrights.

Of the 50 works, five plays are commissioned as full productions and 45 plays in the form of dramatised readings. The five full productions are

  • Stella Kon’s Emily of Emerald Hill directed by Aidli ‘Alin’ Mosbit,
  • Huzir Sulaiman’s The Weight of Silk on Skin directed by Tracie Pang,
  • Haresh Sharma’s Off Centre directed by Oliver Chong,
  • Kuo Pao Kun’s Descendants of the Eunuch Admiral directed by Jeff Chen
  • Tan Tarn How’s The Lady of Soul and Her Ultimate ‘S’ Machine directed by Zizi Azah Abdul Majid
